In February, students from the Guatemala Student Support Group (GSSG) visited Common Hope’s US office to volunteer and learn about our work. The students translated Sponsor letters and made motivational cards for the students in San Rafael. Their cards included personal messages that stressed the importance of education and encouraged the children to stay in school (see excerpts below).
Below are several excerpts from their letters to San Rafael students:
I want you to study a lot and obey your parents and your teachers. Someday I’ll come back to Guatemala and together we are going to be able to change Guatemala for good. My best wishes for you. God bless you and God bless Guatemala.
From my heart and soul I love Guatemala and I have something in my mind that I want to express: Keep going with your studies and don’t dismay for any reason. Education, truly, makes the difference in people’s lives. If you want to be someone in life, you have to make efforts and be brave. We can do it! Keep going!
GSSG provides an opportunity for impoverished Guatemalan youth to attend four years of high school and college in the United States. The organization aims to develop well-educated professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds to, as they put it, “act as a leaven for socioeconomic development when they return to their own country.” Thank you to the youth of GSSG for your contributions!
