First place in first-of-its-kind fundraiser

Hago la Diferencia

Common Hope’s Country Director Tamalyn Gutierrez and Grants & Communications Officer Erin Treinen accept the check from Hago la Diferencia Founder Paolo Leiva.

We recently participated in a groundbreaking new fundraiser in Guatemala. The campaign was sponsored by Hago la Diferencia, a new crowdfunding website similar to GiveMN or Global Giving in the US, the first of its kind in Guatemala. This kind of growing support and promotion for philanthropy by local Guatemalans is a very promising sign.

During the monthlong contest, Common Hope competed against 30 other NGOs, trying to gather the most donations. All participants represented very worthy causes, yet we were honored and heartened to win first place, with the highest number of donations. Common Hope staff members really rallied for the campaign, helping make a great new video describing our work in Spanish, and reaching out to our providers, friends, families, and networks. What’s more, over half of our donations came from our own staff.

The origins of Hago la Diferencia were a wish to help Guatemala, expressed by local business members. The founders first considered creating their own NGO, but they realized there were already so many great organizations in Guatemala. They decided they would rather raise money to help further the great work already being done.

We are very grateful for this new resource and hope to collaborate with Hago la Diferencia in the future. We also plan to refer other grassroots NGOs in Guatemala to this great new tool for fundraising.
