Running to celebrate Día Internacional de la Juventud

International Youth Day (Día Internacional de la Juventud) took place on August 12th. To celebrate, the youth program in Antigua organized a race for boys and girls ages 13-20. Participants signed up in the weeks leading up to the day of the race, which took place on Saturday, August 9 at the Central Park of Antigua. The youth showed up at 8:00 am to receive their number and then the race kicked off at 9:00 am.

The runners made their way through Antigua, passed through the nearby village of Santa Ana, and then finished at our project site in Antigua. As they made their way to the finish line, the participants were greeted with many excited cheers and lots of support from their peers (along with bananas and lots of water). About 75 youth participated in this year’s race.

Participants were divided up into four categories: 13-16 year old boys, 13-16 year old girls, 17-20 year old boys, and 17-20 year old girls. There was an awards ceremony after the race, where 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category were recognized with a variety of prizes. Everyone joined together afterwards to enjoy a snack and play some pick-up games of soccer.

Way to go, runners! ¡Felicitaciones a todos los participantes!
