If you have visited Common Hope in the last year, you may have met Laura Sutton–a kind soul and a wonderful long-term volunteer. She works directly with the youth, helping them in the homework center and supporting them in their studies. Learn a little more about Laura in this short Q&A.
Position: Youth Support
Time with Common Hope: 11 months
Favorite Guatemalan cuisine: The staples–guacamole, beans, chocolate, and coffee
#1 Travel Essential: Purified water and tissues
- How did you come to volunteer here at Common Hope?
I learned about the foundation whilst traveling in Guatemala and started sponsoring a little girl. A few months later I spotted job vacancies in the project newsletter and couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do.
- What has surprised you the most about working with Common Hope?
How happy and friendly everyone is…all the time!
- What is a new skill you have learned through living in Guatemala?
The art of bargaining (required for negotiating the market, shops, taxis, etc.) and understanding chapinismos (Guatemalan slang)–although I’ve still got a long way to go!
- What do you want people back home to know about your experience here?
That I fully believe in the work the foundation does and would love for more people back home (which for me is the UK) to provide support. For just $30-60 (~£20-40) a month – which most of us would easily spend on a night out – you could make such a difference in a child’s life, providing help with education, healthcare, housing and social support. These kids really are awesome and deserve every opportunity.
- Has anything happened during your time here that will make your life different?
I’ve learned so much, even in just a short time here, and met some incredible people. I hope to take much less for granted in the future, and recognize that what we consider ‘problems’ pale into insignificance compared to the adversity often faced by others.
