Diabetes patients undergo corrective eye surgery

Last month on November 26, eight patients from our diabetes support group traveled five hours to San Cristobal Verapaz for ophthalmological surgery to correct complications due to the progression of their diabetes.  Though Common Hope doesn’t have the resources necessary to perform such a procedure onsite, the clinic director Dr. Walter was able to coordinate the surgeries with Guatemalan eye specialist Dr. Ponce.

Cesar, a longtime nurse at the Antigua clinic, accompanied the group on their journey to and from the facility in San Cristobal Verapaz. Surgery was a success for all eight patients, who underwent either cataract or glaucoma surgery. Dr. Ponce, the ophthalmologist who operated on them, made a trip to Antigua last weekend to check-in and reported that all eight patients are doing very well.

Partnerships like the one with Dr. Ponce are crucial to providing the best possible care for our families so that their health is not an obstacle. We wish all eight patients a speedy recovery and a new year filled with health and happiness.
