In the Kitchen with Common Hope: Ponche de Frutas

Happy holidays from all of us at Common Hope! For this edition of In the Kitchen with Common Hope, we’re sharing a classic Guatemalan drink called Ponche de Frutas (hot fruit punch). Traditionally, it’s served on Christmas Eve. It’s sweet, delicious, and very easy to make. Cheers!

Ponche de Frutas


1 pineapple
1 papaya
4 apples
4 oz raisins
4 oz prunes
2 plantains
2 oz Rosa de Jamaica (hibiscus tea)
1/2 oz cinnamon sticks
1 clove of allspice
1 clove
2 liters of water
Sugar to taste


1. Peel the fruit and cut into very small chunks
2. Place fruit in a pot with water and all of the other ingredients.
3. Cook for 45 minutes.
4. Sweeten with sugar to taste.
5. Serve hot.
