On a Vision Team, you will experience the people, culture, and beauty of Guatemala first-hand. You will participate in Common Hope’s work alongside our Guatemalan staff and meet the families whose lives have been changed by their partnership with Common Hope.
During an eight-day trip, your team will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that will enhance your understanding of Common Hope’s programs. Your activities may include visiting families with a social worker, attending informal talks with staff members, sorting supplies in the warehouse, and building a home for a Guatemalan family.
You will also have the opportunity to interact with the children who are attending school with the help of Common Hope. You may volunteer during library tutoring sessions, assist in preschool activities, share arts & crafts or games with youth groups, or teach lessons in a public school classroom. Please note: The Guatemala school year begins in late January and ends in mid October. This affects the volunteer activities we can arrange with children in October through January.
Organize a team
Each team must have a volunteer leader who works closely with Common Hope’s staff to design the trip, manage the arrangements, and provide fundraising support. Our flexible program can host many different types of groups: churches, businesses, families, and civic clubs find the Vision Team volunteer experience rewarding and fulfilling. Generally, participants must be high school age or older. Team members under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older.
Fees and fundraising
The fee to volunteer on a Vision Team is $800 per person. Airfare is a separate personal expense. The volunteer fee helps Common Hope provide private lodging at our project site, meals during your stay, ground transportation, activity coordination, travel insurance, and select weekend tours around the Antigua region.
In addition to individual fees, Common Hope asks that each team makes a fundraising commitment — we ask that each team raise a minimum of $4,000 before traveling to Guatemala. Fundraising is a great way to engage with friends and family and expand Common Hope’s network of support.
As of June 1, 2016, Sponsorship will no longer qualify towards Vision Team fundraising. We strongly encourage sponsorship, but its applicability to Vision Team Fundraising goals will no longer apply. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this change in policy, please contact Kallie Sandell at firstname.lastname@example.org or call her at 651-287-0716.
