Organizational Summary

Common Hope promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala by working with impoverished children and families, as well as the communities in which they live, to partner in a process of development to improve their lives through education, health care, and housing. While education is at the heart of our work, we believe a comprehensive approach to human development is critical for children and families to reach their full potential.

Position Overview:

The Communications Assistant serves Common Hope as a long-term volunteer based in Guatemala as an assistant to the Marketing Manager who is located in the United States. This position also supports the public relations and communications needs of the Country Director on an as-assigned basis.

As Communications Assistant, the role is dedicated to seeking relevant and valuable content and imagery, delivering timely copy, and managing the editorial calendar copy for Common Hope.

  • Demonstrated attitude of service, commitment to work in a service environment and to learn about Guatemalan culture
  • Willingness to work onsite and in the villages
  • Ability to work effectively in both Spanish and English, with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Direct communication skills

Specific Duties:

  • Share Common Hope messages and program impact with donors, sponsors, teams and others to raise consciousness and fund-raise
  • Research and draft stories for newsletters, e-newsletters, website, collateral, social media
  • Serve as communications liaison between Guatemala and United States by working with country team, EMT, program managers, strategic relations department
  • Serve as lead site photographer
  • Support Vision Teams Coordinators as necessary
  • Support the creation of housing videos upon request
  • Translate Collateral and Communications including: newsletters, e-news, and website content into Spanish
  • Develop and maintain a historic and current photo library to document Common Hope’s organizational history across all sites in Guatemala
  • Maintain photo displays in Antigua site
  • Prepare logistics and research content for visiting marketing and photographer function
  • Pitch and deliver articles, news stories to local Guatemalan publications
  • Distribute Common Hope materials and collateral to Guatemala businesses and partners
  • Ensure that sufficient quantities of Common Hope promotional materials are available in Antigua and surrounding villages including hotels, restaurants and other places of frequented by tourists
  • Recruit/Secure new partners and relationships with Guatemalan partners and generate opportunities to share the mission of Common Hope in Guatemala
  • Support the Strategic Relations/Sponsorship teams with photography and copy when requested to cultivate individual relationships with donors
  • Arrange for printing locally when necessary
  • On a case by case basis, support Visitor Experience Team (Hospitality) including Pueblo Tours and translation needs
  • Assist Marketing Manager as directed
  • Update Guatemala Employee photos annually for human resources if time permits

*Training will be provided once the volunteer arrives in Guatemala

Specific Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English/Spanish, International Relations or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing and communications
  • Bilingual
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills a must
  • Creative and flexible
  • Organized; detail-oriented
  • Flexible schedule
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and excellent time management skills
  • Working knowledge of a WordPress website
  • Working knowledge of photo and video editing; Adobe Photoshop, Animoto
  • Social media understanding, strategy and planning knowledge
