Position: Homework Center Coordinator
Location: Familias de Esperanza / Antigua Guatemala
Department: Partner School Program
Reports to: Partner School Director
Supported by: Guatemalan staff members and the Volunteer Coordinator
Conditions: Full time (8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday), short-term volunteer (minimum six months)

Description: Common Hope Homework Centers are an integral part of our educational support services and Partner Schools Program. Designed to reach out to affiliated children struggling to achieve passing grades in grades 1 through to 6, the homework centers provide a safe and quiet environment with adequate space and the necessary tools to complete homework assignments, and thus help children to achieve the grades they need to continue in school. A snack is provided, and games and play time are incorporated into the daily schedule, as well as activities to develop social skills, team building and incentives for good behavior.  Homework Centers are a new initiative, successfully trialed in 2012, making this an exciting time to join the program. For the 2013 school year, we will launch new Homework Centers in 4 partner schools. This would be an excellent opportunity for a teacher, teaching graduate or retiree with a minimum intermediate level of Spanish, looking for a new challenge and a unique insight into Guatemalan life.

  • Willingness to work onsite and in the villages
  • Willingness to share work experiences with donors, sponsors, teams and others to raise consciousness and fundraise
  • Ability to work effectively in Spanish, with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Integrity, openness, and honesty
  • Direct communication skills
  • Ability to work on a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team

Specific Requirements:

  • Teaching experience and classroom management skills (preferred)
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers (preferred)
  • Intermediate level of Spanish
  • High energy
  • Adaptable and quick problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Patience and flexibility
  • Minimum six month commitment

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the homework center in one of our partner schools
  • Provide one-on-one support, or work in small groups with affiliated children to complete their homework assignments
  • Plan, prepare and coordinate other activities as directed by the Education Promoter including group activities, indoor table games, jigsaws, card games, arts and crafts and outdoor sports
  • Train and lead short term volunteers assisting in the program
  • Administrative tasks and class preparation (planning activities, gathering and printing materials)
  • Other responsibilities may be added according to the needs of the organization

Training will be provided once the volunteer arrives in Guatemala.
