Position Overview:

Common Hope hosts groups of visitors (volunteers) and provides opportunities to learn and experience Guatemala and the work of Common Hope.

The Vision Team Coordinator is assigned to teams of visitors who stay for a designated period of time (usually one week) and is responsible for organizing and facilitating the team’s experience. During the team’s stay, the Vision Team Coordinator is the person who implements their itinerary and serves as the primary resource for experiencing a foreign experience of poverty, helping and doing. They serve to ensure the visitor has an incredible experience. They share information, answer questions, facilitate communications and make sure the team’s physical and emotional needs are met.

Their secondary role is to learn visitor interests & goals in order to maintain a long-term relationship with visitors so that they can become ambassadors of the Common Hope mission.

General Requirements:

  • Bilingual
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, values, principles and goals of Common Hope and its four sites in Guatemala
  • Demonstrated attitude of service to work in a mission driven environment and to learn about Guatemalan culture
  • Willingness to work onsite and in the villages
  • Willingness to share work experiences with donors, sponsors, teams and others to raise consciousness and fundraise
  • Integrity, flexibility and creativity
  • Ability to work on a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team
  • The position requires weekends and evenings (a rotation and flex schedule exists to maintain work/life balance for those in this position)

Experience Management

  • Serve as Vision Team leader for Vision Teams coming to learn, work, grow and travel in with Common Hope in Guatemala
  • Work closely with the U.S. Vision Teams Manager and Visitor Experience teammates, other agencies and organizations to plan and arrange the following:
    • schedule
    • work assignments
    • transportation
    • food
    • side trips
    • sponsorship visits
    • reflection activities
    • other activities as needed
  • Execute Vision Team, Vision Team Junior, Team Builder, One Day, and Pueblo Tour experiences for visitors
  • Gain knowledge about Guatemala and the reasons for Common Hope’s work and model
  • Provide clear and direct orientation to incoming teams regarding their health, safety, schedule; follow up with teams if they are not following guidelines

Team Relations

  • Actively listen to team members’ questions and identify opportunity for deeper engagement and understanding of programs; communicate team members’ needs with Hospitality Manager and EMT sponsor
  • Encourage and accompany team members in their emotional connection to the mission and what they’re observing during the course of the week
  • Lead reflection activities for teams that educate and challenge complacency; provide opportunities for historical and cultural context
  • Spend time with teams during evenings and weekends including receiving teams at airport, dinners with teams on and offsite, translate weekend cultural activities


  • Capture and document visitor data and communicate potential engagement opportunities
  • Communicate team members’ medical needs immediately to managers and country team as necessary
  • Provide site tours to individuals and groups of the Antigua site and new communities
  • Assist in the planning and execution of major visitor events such as Graduation and board meetings
  • Administrative support
  • Other responsibilities may be added according to the individual interests of the volunteer and needs of the organization

Specific requirements of the position:

  • University degree
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Adaptability and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • Personable
  • Related experience helpful (i.e. camp counselors, resident assistants, service trip leaders, program coordinator)
  • Minimum one year commitment

*Training will be provided once the volunteer arrives in Guatemala
