  • From Inspiration to Action: Madeline's Volunteer Story

As we celebrate National Volunteer Month, we wanted to shine a spotlight on a remarkable volunteer - Madeline! Through her Vision Team experiences in Guatemala, Madeline not only found inspiration but has also become a catalyst for change. What Inspired Madeline to Volunteer in Guatemala? Madeline's journey with Common Hope began with a simple suggestion from her Rotaract advisor, but it quickly evolved into a life-changing experience. "I believe in people helping people, so traveling with Common Hope was an opportunity I could not turn down," shared Madeline. Common Hope's Vision Team Experience provides service-based trips that are customized to meet the specific needs of the communities in Guatemala that we serve. Each trip is unique, and every day for team members is different. As a volunteer, you will be supporting our dynamic program needs, which may involve working with health, education, housing, and other programs. After her first trip to Guatemala, Madeline knew she had to go back. The impact was mutual between her, our team in Guatemala, and the students and families we serve. The service work, cultural experiences, and connections left an incredible mark on her heart. Madeline's desire to help others and her curiosity about the world laid the foundation for what would become a deeply fulfilling volunteer experience. For those considering joining a Vision Team with Common Hope, Madeline has one piece of advice: go for it! "For now, me and my Rotaract group at Lakeland University are holding several fundraisers in hopes to sponsor a student through Common Hope next school year," said Madeline. Connecting Passion with Purpose Madeline initially pursued studies in education, but she has since shifted her focus to communications. This does not mean that her love for education has diminished — in fact, she remains just as committed to spreading the importance of education as ever before! With aspirations to work with non-profits in the future, Madeline sees her volunteer work as a steppingstone toward creating lasting change in the world. Favorite Memories and Lessons Learned From outdoor adventures to heartwarming sponsorship visits, Madeline's time in Guatemala is filled with cherished memories. "There are too many good memories to pick from," she shared. However, the simple moments like sharing meals with the Common Hope team, enjoying breathtaking views of the volcanoes, and working on the construction site left the most lasting impression on her. Celebrating volunteers like Madeline reminds us of the powerful impact individuals can have when they unite with a common purpose. During National Volunteer Month, let us draw inspiration from the countless acts of kindness and positive impact made by volunteers in the US and Guatemala every day.

Me entristeció.

  • Elaine's Commitment to Education

Elaine's story as a sponsor is one of a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of others. From her early days growing up to her retirement years, Elaine has embodied the values of kindness and a willingness to embrace new challenges. As she eloquently puts it, "If a door closes, there is another door that is going to open— don't hesitate to walk through." Elaine's philosophy on life is simple: resources are meant to be shared. Elaine's journey with Common Hope began in 1998, when she became interested in mission trips to Guatemala after a conversation during a class reunion. During the trip, she asked if she could tag along on a social work home visit, and that's how her journey with Common Hope started. Elaine has been on numerous trips since then, sponsored 24 students, 17 of whom have graduated, and currently is the proud sponsor of 5 students. When asked by some of her friends how she can still travel to Guatemala after 30 years, she answers, " It’s simple! You just need to board a flight and land either in Texas or Florida. From there, you can board another flight to Guatemala City, and then you are off to Antigua!" Elaine's passion for empowering students shines brightly as she shares her hopes for the women participating in Common Hope's programs. Elaine envisions a future where women and men can find confidence, hope, and opportunities for growth. Through her experiences as a sponsor, she has seen firsthand the impact education can have in empowering students to create better futures for themselves and their families. “I can't think of a better way to invest in the future than to invest in education and support students,” shares Elaine. Elaine has a deep admiration for the women of Guatemala. She believes that by empowering women through education, they can become agents of change in their communities. Elaine's hope for the women participating in Common Hope's programs is that they will gain confidence and entrepreneurial skills that will enable them to thrive in the future. Elaine's perspective on women's rights and empowerment has evolved over the years, shaped by her own experiences and interactions with the women in her life. She emphasizes the importance of going beyond one's comfort zone, taking risks, and surrounding yourself with positive relationships. Elaine reflected on her journey, and acknowledged the crucial role mentors and supportive relationships played in shaping her life. She shares that some of her experiences growing up mirror the experiences of students in Guatemala. At the age of 12, Elaine lost her father, and her mother recognized that she required additional support, so she enrolled her in 4-H. “My 4H leader saw something in me that I didn't see. And she always challenged me to give 100% effort in everything I did.” “The educational support program provided by Common Hope for students, and the educators in Guatemala who encourage students to pursue their dreams, help them to look outside themselves like my 4H mentor did for me,” continued Elaine In the end, Elaine's message is clear: no act of kindness is too small. We can truly make a difference in the lives of others, one step at a time. Whether it's through acts of kindness, sponsorship, or mentorship, each of us has the power to make a difference in the lives of others. Meet Elaine and hear more about her passion for Sponsorship at Noche de Colores 2024.

  • Beyond Boundaries: Stories of Hope from New Hope School

In March, we celebrate International Women’s Month. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions and raise awareness about discrimination and take action to drive equality. Common Hope, our dedicated team, and students aspire to drive change to help create a Guatemala that promotes education and opportunity for men and women alike. We invite you to meet the inspiring female leader and Administrative Director of New Hope School, Elsa García, as well as students Elba, Andrea, and Damaris, who wish to make a positive impact on the school community, and beyond. Meet Elsa, New Hope Director In Her Words "As the Administrative Director of New Hope School, my primary goal is to create an environment that fosters trust, security, and warmth for our students. We strive to make every student feel like they belong to a family from the moment they step through the doors until they leave at the end of the day. My experience as a student inspired me to pursue a career in education. During my elementary studies, I had a tough time due to strict and demanding teachers who didn't accommodate "slow" learners. Because of my own experience, I aim to create an environment that promotes trust and security, where students are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings. I am continuously inspired by the children I work with, and I am motivated to be part of the opportunity that education offers to plant a seed of knowledge within them. Everything around us influences in a positive or negative way, living in traditional gendered roles can limit us as human beings, in the sense of limiting opportunities. Over the years, I've seen a shift in the aspirations of our girls at New Hope School. Their interests are no longer limited by traditional roles, and they now dream of professional careers and eagerly participate in activities once believed to be exclusive to boys like soccer, math and robotics. This transformation fills me with pride and reinforces my commitment to providing equal and inclusive spaces for all students. I believe that through education, Guatemalan girls and women can advocate for inclusion and equity by expressing their thoughts and, most importantly, believing in themselves that they belong in all spaces where decisions are being made." Student Spotlight Meet three New Hope students: Elba, Andrea, and Damaris. We asked them about their dreams, sources of inspiration, and times they've left their comfort zones. Elba, 13 "Dreaming big means that we can achieve all our goals, regardless of what others say. Someone once told me that as a woman, I couldn't study what I wanted to study, but my mom inspires me to be an independent and strong woman who can overcome obstacles and achieve anything she sets her mind to. To create more inclusion more organizations, need to be created that advocate for equality so that girls and women in Guatemala are not discriminated against. Also, I want to challenge men who don't let women play in school because of their gender." Andrea, 12 "For me dreaming big is like wanting to fulfill a marvelous dream. My dream is to be an engineer and to raise my family. I advocate for myself by playing soccer. My paternal grandmother once told me that being a woman meant I couldn't play soccer, but I replied, 'Why not? Women and men can both play ball!' It made me feel sad. However, my mom always encourages me to pursue my dreams and never give up. That helps remind me that women can run for office and achieve anything they set their minds to." Damaris, 13 "Dreaming big is being able to fulfill my dreams. My dream is to be a teacher and to keep getting smarter. My mom inspired me to keep believing in pursuing my dreams. I try to be respectful to all people and encourage others to do the same." Through the careful guidance of educators and Common Hope supporters, the next generation of empowered students are ready to make change. By providing access to quality education and nurturing the skills and talents of all students, we can help build a brighter and more equitable future for Guatemalan students. Be a part of their story today by joining The Pathway, where every dollar makes a difference.

  • From Packages to Possibilities: Inside Common Hope's School Supply Fair

Luis, who is part of the Scholarships Administration Department, has had a busy month leading one of Common Hope’s most important projects: organizing the school supply fair. The fair is a month-long event where students and their families receive school supplies, take their school photos, and enroll in Common Hope's educational programs. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for them to correspond with their sponsors through letter writing. “I love seeing families leave with their school package because I know that the small blue package can make a big difference for them,” shares Luis. Over the past month, the Common Hope team in Guatemala has distributed 3,245 school supply packages to students across five different locations, including Antigua, New Hope, San Rafael, Zapote, and San Miguel. This remarkable achievement was made possible through months of logistical planning and teamwork, as shared by Luis. "Social workers surveyed the population of each site and asked them which date worked best for them to attend the festival," Luis explained. This communication was done to ensure that as many students and families as possible were reached without disrupting their daily lives. The average daily income for families in Guatemala is less than $4, with a significant 26% of the population living on less than $2 per day. Luis shared that this year, he struggled to find a package of school supplies for his nephew that cost less than 600Q ($76). He believes that if a family can save money by participating in the school supply festival, they can utilize it to purchase other necessities such as shoes for a student or to put food on the table for the month. Though the team is working long hours, they find it worthwhile as they get to spend time with families who are eager to share their goals for the year. “It’s exciting to see parents taking the time to support their kids and realizing that education is a big investment that involves the whole family,” Luis shares. It reminds him of his days as a student and his family's experience, as three out of his five siblings were sponsored by Common Hope. "Common Hope did so much for me, and three of my siblings received scholarships. This allowed my mom to focus on our education and help us graduate. Thanks to Common Hope, we were all able to achieve our academic goals." Just like Luis, Common Hope believes that through education, there is a way forward. Now, students have the tools they need to start the year and have been made aware of the programs Common Hope provides to continue supporting them as the school year progresses. The Common Hope team is a team of dreamers and achievers. As the festival begins to wrap up, Luis leaves you and his team with one question: What else can we do to keep the excitement going and get students more excited to return to school? The festival officially ends on March 13 and will have supported 3,300 students.

¿Qué me motiva? ¡Felicitaciones graduados! ¡Una meta más! English Beyond Graduation: Paving the Way for Change Access to education empowers students to create long-lasting progressive change. On November 4, 2023, 211 students not only celebrated their high school graduation but also pledged to change the future of Guatemala. They are determined to use their education and skills to make a positive impact on their country. They believe that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and creating a brighter future for all. As they embark on their next chapter, they are determined to make a difference and inspire others to do the same. We invite you to meet four incredible students from the class of 2023 who share what it means to be Guatemalan, who inspires them, and how they plan to make a difference. Anibal López, Accounting with a Concentration in IT/Accounting Software Hello, my name is Anibal López. When I was a boy, I dreamed of graduating from school. It took me 12 years to achieve my dream. The road was not easy, and I had to overcome many obstacles. This is my life story that I am proud to share. To be Guatemalan is to take pride in your roots, to value what you have, and to embody strong values with the capacity to transform the world. I believe that being an agent of change means making a positive impact on the world and people’s lives, and achieving this would bring me immense joy. My greatest aspiration is to become an entrepreneur; owning a bakery is a dream I aim to fulfill one day. My post-graduation plans involve securing a job and pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of San Carlos. My mother is my biggest source of inspiration. I aim to provide her with the best possible life for all the hard work she has put in to give me the chance to pursue my education. Emerson Macario, Computer Science with a focus in science Being Guatemalan means having a deep love for my country and respecting it; this sense of identity fills me with pride. I aspire to be a role model, aiding others in changing the world through my actions. Looking ahead, my future plans include owning a house, securing reliable transportation, and pursuing higher education. I hope to attend engineering school and secure a stable job to support my family. The individuals who inspire me the most are my parents; they have consistently been the driving force behind my aspirations, guiding me to overcome challenges and succeed in life. Despite the difficulties I faced on my journey, with the support of God and my family, I have managed to overcome obstacles and achieve numerous goals. I am a graduate! Enio González, Computer Technician For me, the Guatemalan people are very special because we are hard-working, fight for what we believe in, and are entrepreneurial. We’re a country of hard workers. We feel a sense of pride, a sense of belonging. We are constantly seeking solutions to overcome challenges and aim to give more than we receive. Becoming an agent of change involves learning to identify social issues such as corruption, actively contributing to my community, and dedicating myself to work that I am passionate about to attain a fulfilling lifestyle. My dream involves achieving independence, establishing my own workshop, diligently working each day to afford the journeys I envision, and ultimately owning property. However, completing college remains a priority before pursuing these aspirations. I like repairing computers so my plans for after graduation are to work in that field. My driving force is the desire for progression. I do not wish to blend in but to stand out and accomplish my goals. Achieving this demands greater responsibility than I currently possess and requires me to dedicate myself to what I love to attain my aspirations. I aim to achieve my goals while supporting my parents, they fuel my drive for progress. Heimy Canel, Early Childhood Intercultural Bilingual School Teacher I am so blessed to be born in a wonderful country full of unique cultures and traditions; it’s like seeing a great opportunity. I am proud to be Guatemalan! Mayan cultures, traditions, and languages flow through my veins, and I’m proud of Guatemala’s beauty and diverse tourist destinations. The change I want to see in society and my country is for Guatemalans to continue succeeding in life. I believe working as a teacher and shaping the minds of students for good is a great way to achieve this. My ultimate dream is to go to university and pursue further education, either as an Industrial Engineer or Social Worker. Achieving this is a strong desire of mine. Continuing my studies and securing employment, if given the opportunity, is crucial, especially considering the high unemployment rates in the country. Recognizing this situation, obtaining a job initially to fund my studies is a challenging yet feasible goal. What motivates me? My Dad. My Mom. And the aspiration to effect small changes in both society and the country. These stories not only shed light on students’ personal aspirations but also reflect a broader aspiration shared among all 2023 graduates: a desire to contribute positively to their communities. They are driven by the support of their families and a passion to effect change, both big and small. As they continue their journey beyond graduation, these students exemplify values of hope, curiosity, and responsibility, and an unwavering pursuit of creating a better tomorrow for Guatemala. Congratulations graduates! Una meta mas!

  • Guatemala Update: A Message to Our Community

Dear Common Hope Community, As you may already be aware, Guatemala is grappling with significant challenges due to widespread unrest following its recent presidential election, resulting in protests and blockades around the country. Common Hope is closely monitoring the situation and resulting issues with transportation, access to goods, and disruption of services. We have profound hope for a peaceful and safe resolution as the situation remains tenuous. In these challenging times, our commitment to our mission remains unwavering. We continue to support our families, even in the face of disruptions from the civil unrest, keeping the safety of our team and the families we serve at the center of our focus. We compassionately stand united in supporting our colleagues in Guatemala. We hope for a just outcome and for democracy to prevail, and for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. As an organization, we are in support of anything that leads to the betterment of Guatemalan students, their families, and the community at large. One of the best ways we can support families and our team in Guatemala is to stay up to date with current events. We will strive to communicate matters that pertain to our organization’s operations, considering that the state of the political climate informs how we make decisions, approach communications, and tell the story of Common Hope. Together, we look forward to a brighter and more equitable Guatemala.

  • Empowering Mothers: Prioritizing Mental Health for Stronger Families

Supporting mothers’ mental health is crucial for the well-being of both mothers and their families. When mothers prioritize their mental health and well-being, it has a positive ripple effect on the entire family unit. Common Hope understands that a healthy body includes a healthy mind and is increasingly important when our families are facing uniquely challenging circumstances. Common Hope’s support reaches far beyond just the student but to the whole family. To prioritize education, we must ensure that all members of a family are healthy to promote and foster a positive environment for a child to grow and learn. Meet María José, a mother of two boys. María’s sons are her biggest source of inspiration as she watches them grow and pursue a better life through education. “As a mother, my life’s project is improving my family’s quality of life, which sometimes requires seeking support from others,” shares María. María had always advised her children to keep moving forward, but she was struggling to do so herself. In March, she decided to attend Common Hope Familias de Esperanza’s Mente Sana (Healthy Minds) program to prioritize her own well-being so she could better position herself to get a better job. She felt that in order to provide a loving environment where education can thrive for her sons, she needed to lead by example and model what she says to provide a more resilient family unit. María was able to improve her time management skills and search for a new job with the help of coaching and counseling in the program. Eventually, she found a job that she believes will set her and her family for success in the future. The coaching also inspired her to pursue higher education beyond a high school degree. She is currently in the process of taking tests to qualify for a university in her community so she can become a medical representative. “I can say that the counseling sessions helped me a lot because I learned to prioritize my mental and emotional well-being, training myself to engage in activities that bring me happiness and inner peace,”she continues. Mente Sana has opened doors to new opportunities for María. She feels like she’s become a strong role model for her sons, demonstrating that if you put your mind to something, you have the power to achieve your most ambitious dreams, even in the face of adversity. Sometimes, it simply requires putting yourself first. A mother’s mental health plays a crucial role in the long-term stability of the family. When mothers take care of their mental health, they are better equipped to handle the challenges and changes that may come. “I managed to understand that I cannot and should not agree with things that do not please me, nor make me feel good.” After completing counseling, María is ready to take off and create a future on her terms.

  • The Vital Role of Healthcare in Student and Family Success

In Guatemala, access to healthcare can be challenging for families. When a family member falls ill, it often requires taking time off work to seek medical care. This can result in financial strain as they lose a day’s wages and potentially face medical bills. For our students, it sometimes means leaving their studies to supplement their family income. Carlos, a Common Hope Familias de Esperanza student, had his life take a turn two years ago when his father passed away suddenly. His father was his main pillar of support, providing emotional and financial stability to the family. Adding to the family’s hardship, Carlos’s mother has been battling serious health complications that have led her to be bedridden. This situation has placed a heavy financial burden on Carlos’s older siblings, who have taken on the responsibility of covering the medical expenses and supporting their family. These hardships would impact any child’s emotional well-being and academic performance, not just for our students in Guatemala. Carlos, soon-to-be 2023 graduate. Supporting Dreams through Education Despite these emotional and financial challenges, Carlos is determined to graduate. His social worker saw that Carlos and his family needed more educational support and health assistance. She referred him to Common Hope’s educational and vocational workshops to ensure he was supported every step of the way during his last year of school. Carlos was fully engaged in the workshops, becoming more than just a participant but a leader supporting students and staff in activities. These workshops not only offer guidance on future employment but also provide a network of support for students like Carlos. “I dream of graduation day and being able to support my mom just like my older brothers do,” shared Carlos. Currently, he is maintaining a remarkable 90-grade point average. Healthcare is Key for Brighter Futures Though the central focus of Common Hope Familias de Esperanza is our educational mission, a family’s ability to thrive and their children’s ability to stay in school depends on their physical and mental health. Carlos’s story serves as a reminder of the critical role that healthcare plays in the success of students and their families. Access to healthcare services, emotional support, and educational opportunities are interconnected factors that can help students like Carlos overcome challenges and work toward a brighter future. Supporting individuals like Carlos in their educational journey benefits not only them but also uplifts future generations and communities. Carlos’s steps to ensure that he meets his educational goals have paid off! He will be walking The Pathway of Dreams and joining the graduating class of 2023! • HOME SWEET HOME(S)   – Building brighter futures for 35 families

“We are thankful to have the support of another local nonprofit, as by working together we can support more and more families.” – Fernando, Housing Manager Excitement is in the air for 35 Common Hope families as they received new homes over the summer, thanks to a special partnership with fellow non-profit Constru Casa. Both Constru Casa and Common Hope share a mission to provide families with a safe and healthy place to call home. A home is more than just a shelter; it serves as the very foundation upon which a better future can be built. It enables families to pursue their goals, nurture their relationships, and turn their dreams into reality. In May, Common Hope’s housing team started building houses for families in the Antigua area. The team’s dedication to improving the lives of families was clear as they worked hard to finish the project by the end of August.  The efforts of Constru Casa and Common Hope resulted in 35 families receiving new homes, complete with energy-saving stoves, desks, water filters, and bunk beds to enhance their living conditions. These housing initiatives not only provide families with a safe and secure environment but also empower them to focus on their children’s education. The partnership between Common Hope, Constru Casa, and our families symbolizes the power of collaboration and the collective efforts it takes to make change. These collaborative efforts offer a fresh start and new possibilities for students, their families, and their community. The new homes mark the beginning of a new chapter filled with optimism, stability, and opportunities for a better life. Your help is essential in empowering our families and aiding them in achieving their educational goals. By donating to Common Hope’s Housing program, you can help us provide safe and secure housing to more families and offer them a brighter future. • 2023 HopeMasters Golf Classic Recap

Common Hope Familias de Esperanza hosted its annual golf tournament, the HopeMasters, on Monday, August 28th, 2023. The tournament, hosted at the Minneapolis Golf Club delivered amazing views, stunning greens, and a wonderful golf scramble dedicated to driving change. Thanks to our incredible sponsors, donors, and golfers, $137,000 was raised to provide safe and secure housing for students and families in Guatemala. What a hole-in-one! The contributions made by our 120 golfers and guests has a significant impact on families’ lives by making their dream of a secure and safe home a reality. Josue (left) and raffle winner. Common Hope’s Director of Operations, Josue, flew in from Guatemala to give exclusive updates about the housing program and was the keynote speaker of the event. Josue shared that housing is essential for all people and that a home creates the foundation of our social and emotional life. “Close your eyes for a few seconds, think about your home, and think about what it makes you feel. When I think about my home, I feel proud. When I asked some families, they expressed different sentiments because of inadequate access to housing caused by lack of funds,” shared Josue. Many Guatemalan families face challenges in accessing the formal financial system. As a result, banks are hesitant to provide them with loans, and government initiatives don’t exist to assist families in securing housing funds. Common Hope Familias de Esperanza’s housing program helps families and communities acquire secure and dignified homes, allowing them to break the cycle of poverty. A home creates a more stable home environment so families can focus on their goals and their children can focus on education. Thank you to the five golfers who sponsored students! “I have personally witnessed the life-changing impact of Common Hope’s work on countless children and families over the years. I have many friends who thanks to the support received, can now go in search of their dreams. I feel very honored to be able to serve my community and others around, thank you,” continued Josue. We are grateful to all our golfers who participated in the tournament, dedicating their day to contribute to Common Hope’s housing initiatives. By doing so, you are driving change and making a significant impact on families’ lives, helping them achieve their dream of a secure and safe home. We hope everyone had a blast, and we can’t wait to see you next year! Click here to see photos from the event.
