Position Overview
A great opportunity for a gap year experience or recent graduate! The Communications Assistant serves Common Hope as a paid intern (or a contractor based on experience) based in Guatemala as an assistant to the Associate Director of Marketing and Events (ADM) who is located in the United States. This position also supports the Visitor Experience team in Guatemala when needed.

As Communications Assistant, the role is dedicated to being a “field reporter” working with program staff in Guatemala to seek relevant and valuable content and imagery, report on program updates, and be a liaison to the Strategic Relations team in the U.S. and Guatemala.

  • Report daily to ADM on upcoming on-site events, activities, and other points of interest in order to determine potential eNewsletter articles, blog posts, and social media posts.
  • Work with Guatemala program managers to stay up-to-date on activities in order to report important information that will be shared with U.S. stakeholders
  • Attend Common Hope hosted activities on-site and in surrounding communities and take notes and photos
  • Research stories for newsletters, e-newsletters, website, collateral, social media including stories on staff members, programs, Common Hope students, and families
  • Serve as lead site photographer and videographer
  • Create, update, and manage photo diaries for Vision Teams
  • Create and translate housing videos for Vision Teams
  • Translate Collateral and Communications including: newsletters, e-news, and website content into Spanish
  • Develop and maintain a historic and current photo library to document Common Hope’s organizational history across all sites in Guatemala


  • Work closely with grants team to report on program activity, help with statistics, and provide photography for grant applications and reports

Sponsorship and Visitor Experience

  • On a case by case basis, support Visitor Experience Team with Pueblo Tours, sponsorship translation needs, and other duties as assigned
  • Help Sponsorship and Visitor Experience teams take yearly photos of students


  • Maintain photo displays in Antigua site
  • Prepare logistics and research content for visiting marketing and photographer function
  • Distribute Common Hope materials and collateral to Guatemala businesses and partners
  • Ensure that sufficient quantities of Common Hope promotional materials are available in Antigua and surrounding villages including hotels, restaurants and other places of frequented by tourists
  • Arrange for printing locally when necessary
  • Update Guatemala Employee photos annually for human resources if time permits

Specific Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English/Spanish, International Relations or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing and communications
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills a must
  • Creative and flexible
  • Organized; detail-oriented
  • Flexible schedule
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and excellent time management skills
  • Working knowledge of photo and video editing; Adobe Photoshop, Animoto
