Meet Valeska & Manny: A Love Letter to Guatemala

We have some exciting news and a fun way for you to show your love for Guatemala as we gear up for Guatemalan Independence Day on September 15th! Common Hope is thrilled to support Guatemalan businesses, especially when we partner with like-minded individuals who share our passion for creating brighter futures through the power of education. We’re excited to introduce you to our friends Valeska and Manny, Guatemalan business owners in Chicago who, like us, have a deep love for Guatemala.

Get to Know Girón

At the heart of Girón's Patria collection lies a love letter to Guatemala—a tribute to its rich heritage, vibrant culture, and resilient people. Girón tells the story of two Guatemalan business owners whose lives have been transformed through art and storytelling and that no matter where they go, they are proud to be Guatemalan.

Why We Started Girón

Girón was born out of a deep love for Guatemala and a desire to showcase the beauty of its culture. As Guatemalan-Americans, we recognized that we had a unique platform to showcase Guatemala's rich culture and give the artisans and their textiles the honor and respect they deserve. Our goal was to elevate the beauty of Guatemala and bring attention to a country that is often overlooked but should never be underestimated.

The Values that Drive Us

In our work, we have a commitment to excellence, unwavering quality, punctuality, and authenticity in every project. Integrity is also important. I learned long ago that while others may try to replicate your work, they can't replicate who you truly are or the values you uphold. Being authentically yourself is what sets you apart, both in art and in business.

Valeska’s Advice to Students and Graduates

Stay true to your vision and values, even when challenges arise. When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a nurse because I was always inclined to help others. Although I had a strong passion for art, my parents would often remind me that art doesn't pay the bills. They wanted the best for me, and I understand that. But now, art does pay the bills, and through our business, we're finding meaningful ways to give back and make a difference. Success and building a business is not just about making a profit; it's about creating something meaningful that reflects who you are. Remember that persistence is key. There will be setbacks, but each one is an opportunity to learn and grow. Most importantly, never lose sight of the passion that inspired you to start this journey. It's that passion that will keep you going, even when the road gets tough.

Community is at the heart of everything we do; without it, our business wouldn't thrive. We always consider our Guatemalan community when designing new products. We ask ourselves: Will this resonate with Guatemalans? Will it make them proud of their heritage? Will it evoke a sense of connection, reminding them of their childhood, their families, or their time in Guatemala? These questions guide our work, ensuring that each product we create honors and strengthens the bond within our community.

Giving back is also essential to our mission. We are committed to empowering our own people and supporting them in meaningful ways. Partnering with Common Hope is our first step as a young business, and we look forward to continuing to make a positive impact.
